Fibromyalgia is a painful condition that has long baffled the healthcare professionals. Until recently many FMS sufferers went undiagnosed or worse, were often misdiagnosed. Patients with Fibromyalgia experience muscle pain throughout the body. Other symptoms often coincide with the severe muscle pain of Fibromyalgia and may include:
- insomnia
- irritable bowel
- anxiety and/or depression
- fatigue
- dizziness
- areas of numbness or tingling
- headaches
- cold extremities
- cognitive difficulties
- lack of muscle strength
- and numerous trigger points throughout the musculature of the body
It is an common disorder affecting up to 8 million people or 4% of the American population. Most sufferers are women and approximately 20% of patients are disabled. Much previously written medical literature states that Fibromyalgia Syndrome or FMS is incurable because it's exact cause was unknown. It is, however, recently understood that most people with FMS or Fibro have multi casual factors bringing about their condition. The pieces of this puzzle are finally starting to fit together. It is now becoming apparent that a multifaceted and balanced approach to caring for this condition should be used.
